Dialing the United States
- Country code: +1
- Example number: +1 212 555 0147
- US numbers have 10 digits: a 3-digit area code and a 7-digit number. From abroad, dial +1 first. There's no leading 0 to drop: (212) 555-0147 becomes +1 212 555 0147.
| Starts with | What it is |
|---|---|
| 212, 310, 415… | Area codes, for landlines and mobiles alike (212 New York, 310 Los Angeles, 415 San Francisco) |
| 800, 888, 877, 866, 855, 844, 833 | Toll-free numbers (see below) |
| 900 | Premium-rate numbers, which can't be called |
Many 1-800 toll-free numbers don't work from abroad. Banks, airlines and government agencies often don't accept international calls on their toll-free lines. Look on their contact page for a number for calls from outside the US (a normal area-code number) and dial that instead.
