How to call your Australian bank from overseas
Updated
Short answer
To call an Australian bank from overseas, dial the bank's "from overseas" +61 number, not its 13 or 1300 number, from a browser-based service like RobinPhone. Calls to Australian landlines cost $0.03 a minute, your first minute is free, and you can wait on hold without roaming charges or a local SIM.
Cards get blocked at the worst moments: the hotel check-in in Bali, the rental-car desk in Lisbon, a fraud text at 2 am Melbourne time. The bank wants a phone call, but your Australian SIM is roaming or sitting in a drawer at home, and the 13 number on the back of your card won't connect from abroad. Below is the number that will, for each major bank, and the cheapest way to call it.

Why the 13 or 1300 number doesn't work from abroad
13, 1300 and 1800 numbers are set up for callers inside Australia and are usually not reachable from overseas networks. Every Australian bank publishes a separate +61 landline number for customers abroad, which is what the table below lists. Dial it with +61 and no leading 0.
Only call a number you got from the bank itself
Use the number on the back of your card, in the bank's app, or on its own website (linked under each number below). Scam texts that say "your card has been blocked, call this number" rely on you calling them back.
Never call a number from a text message, email or search ad, even if it shows your bank's name. If in doubt, lock the card in the bank's app first, then call the official line.

Numbers checked on each bank's website on 21 October 2026. Banks change them occasionally, so if a line doesn't answer, check the number on the back of your card or in the bank's app.
Step by step
- 1Lock the card in the app first, if it's lostAll seven banks let you lock or cancel a card instantly in their app or online banking. Do that, then call about a replacement.
- 2Open RobinPhone in any browserWi-Fi or data is enough. No app, no Australian SIM.
- 3Type the +61 number from the tableFor example +61 2 9999 3283 for Commonwealth Bank. Use the on-screen keypad for the phone menu and to key in your card number or customer ID.
- 4Say you're overseas if you can't get the SMS codeMost banks can verify you another way over the phone, with security questions or through their app. Our guide to verifying your account while abroad covers the options.
- 5Stay on hold without watching the meterA 25-minute call, hold time included, costs about $0.75. If you verify your own mobile number in RobinPhone, the bank sees your usual number as caller ID.

Common questions
How do I call Commonwealth Bank from overseas?
Call +61 2 9999 3283, which CommBank runs 24/7 for customers overseas, including lost or stolen cards. From a browser with RobinPhone it costs $0.03 a minute.
Can I call a 13 or 1300 number from outside Australia?
Usually not. They're routed for callers inside Australia. Use the bank's +61 overseas number instead; every major bank publishes one.
Does the bank charge me for calling the overseas number?
No, the bank doesn't charge. You pay your own call cost, which with RobinPhone is $0.03 a minute to an Australian landline. Some banks also accept reverse-charge calls placed through the international operator from a landline.
What if I can't get the SMS verification code?
Tell the agent you're overseas without your Australian SIM. Banks can usually verify you with security questions or through their app instead.
Will the bank see my number when I call?
If you verify your mobile number in RobinPhone, yes, your calls show that number. Otherwise the bank sees a RobinPhone number. Either way the call connects normally.
Is the first call free?
Yes. New accounts get a free 1-minute test call to Australian landlines, with no payment needed. After that you buy prepaid credit from $5 and pay $0.03 a minute. Credit never expires.
